Catalogue Numbers with Divisions

It will be noticed that some catalogue numbers are further subdivided with letters. These are: MSS. 2 (I, II, III), 66 (A), 16 (I, II), 98 (A), 114 (A, B), 171 (A, B), 197 (A, B), and 580 (A, B, C). These subdivisions, for the most part, reflect the binding history of the manuscripts in question. These manuscripts can be grouped into three broad categories: single-volume manuscripts bound in multiple parts; multi-volume manuscripts re-bound to reflect the distinct nature of each volume; and manuscripts not bound together originally, but related in some other way.

Single manuscripts bound in multiple parts

  • MSS. 2I, 2II, 2III (the Bury Bible, bound in three parts post-James)
  • MSS. 16I, 16II (Matthew Paris, Chronica maiora II, bound in two parts post-James)
  • MSS. 114A, 114B (Parker's Correspondence, bound in two parts and described as such in James)
  • MSS. 171A, 171B (Scotichronicon, bound in two parts post-James)
  • MSS. 580A, 580B, 580C (the Parker Certificates in three parts, not described in James)

Multi-volume manuscripts re-bound

  • MSS. 66, 66A (two manuscripts with a complicated binding history, see long descriptions, associated with Cambridge University Library Ff. 1. 27)
  • MSS. 197A, 197B (the Northumbrian Gospels fragments, 197B, have been separated from the later material with which they were bound at James's time)

Other

  • MSS. 98, 98A (two 15th-century vellum rolls)
