Some manuscripts are paginated and others are foliated. Pagination is as in modern books, usually with consecutive page numbers written on the top outer corners of both sides of each leaf. Foliation is a numbering system which has the folio number written at the top right corner on the front side of each leaf (the recto, abbreviated as r), with no number written on the reverse (the verso, abbreviated as v).
